Description

Two portraits of Revd Basil Beridge and Mrs Beridge: the former, standing before a red curtain and landscape, his left arm resting on a plinth, wearing grey trousers, black double-breasted tail coat, white chemise, stock and tie; the latter, seated before a landscape, her left arm resting on a plinth, wearing white dress cut at her shoulders with puff sleeves and lace slip, gold belt with blue cabochon enamel, the same decoration at her shoulders, gold shawl about her arms, gold wedding bands, gold pendent earrings, her dark hair upswept (cracked).
The former, signed on the obverse and dated Noel N Carter 1835, the latter signed on the obverse and dated W Barclay/ 1832, black card and gilt-metal slips within gilded wood frames with foliate and scroll borders.

Reverend Basil Beridge (died c.1881) was rector of Algarkirk-cum-Fosdykein Lincolnshire. He was the son of Reverend Basil Bury Beridge (1737/8-1808) whose portrait, circa 1785, by Joseph Wright of Derby (1734–1797) resides in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna, Austria.
