Notes

A preparatory study for an illustration in Versailles et les deux Trianon, 1899-1900, by Philippe Gille. The buffet d'eau, built 1700-1, (fig.1), was designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart (1646-1708), royal architect to Louis XIV and great-nephew of architect François Mansart. It is executed in red Languedoc and white Carrara marble and is crowned by the bronze figures of Neptune and Amphitrite flanked by lions, above four tritons. Hardouin-Mansart also designed at Versailles the Grand Trianon, the Galérie des Glaces, the Chapel, and the Orangery, as well as the Place Vendôme and the Dôme des Invalides in Paris.
