Indian Flute
Oil on Masonite
29 x 24 inches

At the age of fifteen, Odon Hullenkremer entered a painting competition in Budapest, winning first prize. The judges thought it impossible for such a young boy to have won the competition and questioned his parents and family. With his talents confirmed, the young Odon was presented to the Emperor Franz Josef. He was immediately admitted to the Hungarian Royal Academy, and later at the University of Alexandria, Egypt, the Kunstgewerbe Berlin and the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin.

Hullenkremer was afforded opportunity to travel and in the next few years journeyed to the Holy Land, North Africa, South Africa, South America, the West Indies, Canada, and America, eventually settling in New Mexico in the 1930s. Hullenkremer quickly gained a reputation as a leading portrait and genre painter in Santa Fe.
