Description

Oil on Board Portrait of Maryland Naval Officer, Lt. William Hindman Campbell (1795-1839), possibly the work of William James Hubard (1807-1862), Baltimore, MD, second quarter 19th century, portrait of Lt. William Campbell in his naval uniform, coat embellished with brass buttons and epaulets. Campbell was appointed Midshipman May 30, 1816, eventually obtaining the rank of Lieutenant April 28, 1826. On September 6, 1839 he drowned at Moses Comfort and was buried in Brooklyn, New York. William James Hubard (1807-1862),British born artist worked in England and the United States and studied under Thomas Sully and Gilbert Stuart. His portraits of Jackson, Calhoun, Clay, Marshall, John Carroll and others are known to survive in institutions and private collections. Another portrait of Lt. William Hindman Campbell by William Hubard is published in Classical Maryland 1815-1845. Provenance: Harry D. Berry, Jr. collection, Towson, Maryland. Some inpainting to forehead and cheeks. Antique gilt frame with some losses to gilt. L 24" x 18 1/2.
