Formerly in an important collection, formed in the early 20th century, of a Jesuit missionary.

Zha Sheng (1650-1707) was from Haining and used the art names Zhongwei and Shengshan. He gained attained the jinshi degree in 1699 and then was named a compiler in the Hanlin Academy. His calligraphy has been described as being elegant with the verve of Dong Qichang’s writing, especially concerning his small characters in regular script (xiaokai shu).
