Oliver O'Connor Barrett (1908 - 1987), carved hardwood sculpture - 'The Quickening', signed and dated 'Barrett 1936', 54cm high. Provenance: Acquired direct from the artist by Dr John Grant, pen name Jonathan Gash, crime novelist, author and creator of the Lovejoy novels. N.B. Oliver O'Connor 'Connor' Barrett was a largely self-taught sculptor and artist whose career spanned periods in New York and Colchester. Brother of Roderic Barrett (1920-2000), he is best known for his figural sculptural pieces of the 1930s and 1940s reminiscent of Henry Moore and Elizabeth Frink, the present lot is a rare survivor of this period
