EXHIBITED: Valley House Gallery, Dallas,"Loren Mozley: Exhibition", February - March 1967; University Art Museum at University of Texas, Austin, "Loren Mozley - A Retrospective", February 19 - March 26, 1978. Born in Brookport, Illinois, Loren Mozley grew up in lumber and mining camps and near American Indian pueblos in New Mexico. He studied at the University of New Mexico, but in 1926, left college to move to Taos. For the next two years he painted, exhibited his work at the Harwood Gallery, and befriended artists Andrew Dasburg, Dorothy Brett, John Ward Lockwood, Kenneth Adams, and John Marin, among others. Mozley then studied in Paris and lived in New York City. He returned to Taos in 1935 and began teaching art at the University of New Mexico. Mozley left New Mexico in 1938 to help Ward Lockwood organize the new art department at the University of Texas in Austin. He exhibited regionally including the Texas General exhibitions. Nationally, Mozley exhibited in New York, Colorado Springs, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C. Mozley retired from the University of Texas in 1975. His work is in the collections of the Archer M. Huntington Art Gallery, Austin; the Old Jail Art Center, Albany; and the Witte Museum, San Antonio.
