Signed and dated lower left: Maurice Orange 1896. Oil on canvas. 72 x 54cm. Framed. Overleaf side: On the canvas, numbered with stencil: 20. Maurice Orange, inspired by his teachers Léon Gérôme, Edouard Détaille and Marie-Auguste Flameng, consigned himself quite early to the painting of battles. His works are distinguished - in contrast to the classical battle paintings - especially by their lively, colourful compositions with anecdotal character. After recieving several awards (1891 the medal "for exceptional accomplishment" as well as1893 the medal "Prix de Paris")he participated in 1893 in the Paris Salon. Other worksof Orange can be found in, umongst others, the Museum of Cherbourg and Rouen.
