OTIS DOZIER (1904-1987)
Caddo Cypress, 1934
Pencil
11in. x 8.5in.
Estate stamp lower right

Early in his career, Otis Dozier became associated with the new art movement called Regionalism. One of the goals of Regionalism was to develop an art form emphasizing the locality, one in which the common man would be able to identify and understand. The Regionalists felt a true artist should paint out of the land and people he knows best.

To this end, Otis Dozier traveled east from Dallas to Caddo Lake, a strange and mysterious swampy place where gnarled, mishappen cypress trees grow out of the water with limbs draped in wispy spanish moss. In these drawings Otis Dozier elevates these strange Caddo Lake tree forms to become monumental and iconic symbols of Texas.
