Item Overview

Description

Each president depicted bust length within chased reeded and ellipse borders on a gold ground, the swan-form handles with acanthus leaf terminals in matt and burnished gold. Height 14 5/8 inches.John Adams, second President of the United States, and Thomas Jefferson, the nation's third President, are uniquely linked in American history. As founding fathers, their political philosophies and writings combined to form the key elements of the Declaration of Independence. Each served early diplomatic missions in France, fostering a close friendship between the two men. Later their relationship became strained, as the ideals of Jeffersonian democracy challenged the Federalist establishment. Adams and Jefferson reconciled in old age, conducting a warm correspondence between Quincy and Monticello during the last years of their lives. The Marquis de Lafayette, only surviving general of the Continental Army, paid each a special visit on his return tour of America in 1824-25. A year later, in a cosmic turn of events, both men died on July 4th, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Adams' last words were "Jefferson survives," not knowing that Jefferson had passed on four hours earlier.French porcelains began to appear in the homes of wealthy Americans during the first quarter of the nineteenth century, not only reflecting Franco-American political alliances but an interest in the neoclassical style. Porcelain from this era often depicts historical events and patriotic subjects. Beginning with the administration of George Washington and continuing throughout the nineteenth century, American presidents chose Paris porcelain for their table and decorative wares. The Paris factories recognized the predilection for French design and catered to the stylistic preferences of overseas buyers, who believed Paris porcelain to be finer and less costly than pieces produced by the Sevres factory. Not only were Americans patronizing French manufacturers, but the preference for French design influenced the production of early nineteenth century American porcelain factories as well.Literature: A pair of vases depicting George Washington and Benjamin Franklin are discussed and illustrated in Ellen Paul Denker & J. Jefferson Miller, II, "Treasures of State: Fine and Decorative Arts in the Diplomatic Reception Rooms of the U.S. Department of State," pp. 286-287, as well as a single vase depicting Benjamin Franklin, p. 287 and a pair of vases depicting the Marquis de Lafayette, p. 289.
