Cette paire de canapés, d’un rare modèle, porte l’estampille de Georges Jacob, illustre menuisier de la fin du XVIIIe siècle, à qui l’on doit notamment l’introduction de l’acajou dans l’art du siège. Chaque siège présente un chevet et un dossier renversés soulignés de moulures, caractéristique du goût « étrusque » alors très en vogue vers 1795. Chaque siège repose sur quatre pieds rythmés d’anneaux. Une « joue » perpendiculaire à la ceinture, forme une sorte d’alcôve, renforçant l’aspect intimiste du meuble.

Les accotoirs et leurs consoles sont typiques de l’oeuvre de Georges Jacob à cette époque, adoptant un balustre émergeant d’un bulbe, posé sur un dé de raccordement cannelé. On retrouve ce type d’accotoirs notamment sur un fauteuil du maître conservé au Mobilier National.
La maison Jacob Frères poursuivra ce type de construction élégant quelques années après comme on peut l’observer sur les consoles d’accotoirs d’un canapé exécuté entre 1796 et 1799 et conservé au Château de Fontainebleau.
