Description

PAJOU Augustin (1780-1809).
Allégorie à la naissance du Dauphin.
Groupe en terre cuite, reposant sur un socle tournant en bois sculpté et doré. Représentant sous les traits de Vénus la reine Marie-Antoinette sortant des eaux soutenue par des dauphins et tenant son premier fils, le dauphin Louis-Joseph, né le 22 octobre 1781. Légères usures du temps, mais bon état général.
H. : 54 cm – Diam. : 30,5 cm.


Historique : pour commémorer la naissance tant attendue du dauphin, le prince Louis-Joseph de France, le comte d’Angiviller (1730-1809), directeur général des Bâtiments du roi, commanda en 1781 à l’artiste un groupe en porcelaine de Sèvres. Le sculpteur livra l’ouvrage le 24 décembre 1781, mais l’auteur de cette œuvre avait donné à Vénus les traits de la reine et en raison de la nudité de la déesse et de la ressemblance du visage, l’œuvre fut jugée inconvenante par la souveraine qui la refusa. Le 20 janvier 1782, le directeur de la manufacture de Sèvres recevait l’ordre de changer la physionomie de la tête de Vénus et de supprimer les fleurs de lys se trouvant sur le drapé. Le maître réalisa les modifications demandées et le modèle put être mis en vente. Louis-Simon Boizot qui devait en exécuter la fabrication écrira : « M. Pajou m’a demandé s’il n’y avait pas moyen d’avoir en plâtre le groupe en question pour en mieux choisir l’ensemble ; idem sur ce qui concerne les fleurs de lys à ôter de la draperie, il m’a dit qu’il n’y avait rien à changer au moule, et que les réparateurs pourraient les supprimer. » Les exemplaires en biscuit commercialisés par la manufacture ne furent acquis que par les membres de la famille royale, trois par le roi Louis XVI en 1782, un autre par le comte d’Artois, le 16 août de la même année, et un cinquième en janvier 1783 par la duchesse de Civrac pour Madame Victoire, l’une des tantes du roi. Curieusement aucune de ces éditions modifiées n’est aujourd’hui connue, seules subsistent des versions en plâtre et en terre cuite dans son premier aspect. Comme si l’artiste n’avait pas modifié les demandes d’Angivilller, ou si finalement cette version avait trouvé grâce aux yeux du public et servi de modèle aux nombreuses versions tardives en biscuit que nous connaissons aujourd’hui.

Référence : Cette œuvre fut présentée dans le cadre de l’exposition consacrée à l’artiste : « Pajou Sculpteur du Roi », en 1997. Voir la reproduction de cette pièce sous le n°218 du catalogue en pages 217 et 218. Voir une autre version de cette œuvre en plâtre patiné façon terre cuite sur un socle en marbre de Rance et bleu turquin dans le catalogue de l’exposition « Marie-Antoinette » au Grand Palais du 15 mars au 30 juin 2008, page 128, conservée au château de Versailles, sous le numéro d’inventaire : MV 8108. Cette allégorie que nous vous présentons fut illustrée en couverture du magazine Connaissance des Arts, en août 1961. Voir également une version contemporaine en biscuit, dans le catalogue de l’exposition « Vivre à l’antique de Marie-Antoinette à Napoléon Ier », éditions Monelle Hayot, Paris, 2012, page 126.

Provenance : ancienne collection de la comtesse Sala, née Mrs Laura Kayser (1874-1961), épouse d’un diplomate français le comte Antoine Sala (1871-1947), à la mort de ce dernier elle devient la femme de Mr. Edwin S. Bayer. Il est intéressant de savoir que le père du comte, André-Adolphe Sala (1802-1867), fut le compagnon d’armes de la duchesse de Berry en 1832 lors de la tentative de soulèvement de la Vendée. Cette œuvre fut acquise, pour la somme de 10 000 $, puis mise en vente les 17 et 18 novembre 1961 auprès de la galerie Parke-Bernet à New York, sous le n°211. Puis dans les années 1970, elle rentre dans la collection du banquier André Meyer (1898-1979). Elle passera en vente lors de la vente de sa succession de ce dernier par la maison Sotheby’s à New York, le 22 octobre 1980 sous le n°1 – Puis mis en vente chez Sotheby’s Paris, le 25 juin 2003, sous le n°72.

The purchaser will be charged for all the expenses caused by the re-auctioning of the property. If the new auction price does not reach the former one, the failing purchaser have to pay the difference.
In any case, the purchaser will be liable for any deficiency, any and all costs, handling charges, late charges, expenses, legal fees, expenses and incidental damages.

Coutau-Bégarie Auction House guarantees the authenticity of attribution of property listed in the catalogue which can be modified by saleroom notices or oral indications given at the time of the sale, recorded in the official sale record.
The correctness of the catalogue or other description of the physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, medium, provenance, exhibitions or historical relevance of any property is a statement of opinion only.
Any illustrations in the catalogue are solely for the guidance of prospective buyers and are not to be relied upon in terms of colour or necessarily to reveal imperfections in any lot.

Many lots are of an age or nature which precludes their being in mint condition and some descriptions in the catalogue make reference to damage or restoration. Subject to any reserve price, the highest bidder shall be the buyer and a dispute shall be settled by the auctioneer who may at any time at his absolute discretion and regardless of the fall of the hammer re-open the bidding or withdraw the lot from sale.
Payment is in euro and is expected almost immediately after bidding for an item. We accept cash, pre-approved cheque or credit card. Bank commissions and expenses have to be paid by the buyer.

PHONE OR ABSENTEE BIDS
The Auction House will execute absentee bids and accept telephone bids as a courtesy to clients who are unable to attend the auctions.
"Phone or Absentee Bid" forms are available online or from the head office. Therefore, we take no responsibility for any errors or omissions in connection with this service.
For the Phone bid, when the auctioneer is approaching the particular lot number, a staff member will phone and you can instruct them to bid on your behalf.
For the Absentee bid, you must nominate an amount indicating the maximum price you are prepared to pay for the item.
The auctioneer will bid on your behalf until the price has reached your nominated amount.
If bidding doesn't reach this amount, you win the item for the price at which the bidding ceased.
Bulky lots acquired on absentee bids will be kept on Drouot's storage (see the conditions applied).
Small lots will be kept at Coutau-Begarie's office, beyond a week, 3 € per day will be applied.
