Notes

A keen student of traditional European painting, Pan Yuliang amalgamated the respective strengths of Impressionism, Modernism and Chinese folk art. She invested her works with rich colour, flowing ease, and assured animation. Pan started to produce works featuring female figures in the 1940s. Most of them were self-portraits, beginning with Naked Lady of 1942. She participated in the exhibition of "Sketch and Watercolour Salon" on May 29th, 1952. Works included After Shower, Nudity Pictures and Playing Puppy, the first of which was collected by the Paris Modern Art Exposition Hall. Exuding a strong Oriental flavour and capturing the mood of the times, this painting blends Eastern and Western styles with its lively concert of colours and lines, executed with darting, confident brushstrokes.
