Previously given to Jacopo Ligozzi, this well-preserved painting is by the Milanese artist Paolo Camillo Landriani, as identified by Professor Giulio Bora, who has noted a characteristic Northern influence in the still life elements. Primarily a fresco painter, Landriani's surviving easel pictures are rare, one comparable example being the Saint John the Baptist in Santa Maria della Passione in Milan.
Although the painting's early history cannot be established with any certainty, the fact that it was acquired in Spain suggests the possibility that it was perhaps commissioned by Juan Fernández de Velasco, fourth Condestabile de Castilla, an important collector who was also one of Spain's highest ranked diplomats. Between 1592 and 1613, Velasco acted as official agent on behalf of the king, acquiring a number of paintings in Italy. Velasco twice held the post of Governor of Milan, first from 1592 until 1600, and again from 1610 to 1612, and during both these terms, he is known to have commissioned works from Landriani.
