Lot 122: Pasquale Ottino (Verona 1578-1630)

Christ on the Cross with Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Jerome oil on slate, arched top 17 7/8 x 83/4 in. (45.5 x 22 cm.) PROVENANCE Anon. Sale, Sotheby's, Monaco, 18-19 June 1992, lot 285 (FFr122,100 to the present owner). NOTES We are grateful to Professor Sergio Marinelli and Giorgio Marini for independently confirming the attribution on the basis of transparencies. The former considers the picture to be one of the artist's best works and has written on it in 'Da Turchi a Grammatica: Integrazioni al Seicento', Verona Illustrata, 2001 (still due for publication). The picture relates closely to a Deposition, also on slate and of an identical format, sold, Sotheby's, London, 8 April 1981, lot 125 (œ1,900), which might well have been its pendant. Two larger autograph versions of the Deposition are known in the pictures in the Museo di Castelvecchio, Verona, and another offered for sale, Sotheby's, London, 11 April 1990, lot 2.
