Born in Freiburg, Paul Heermann had by 1701-2 established his career in Dresden as a sculptor in wood, stone and ivory. A number of ivory reliefs of the Holy Family, with and without the infant St. John, are recorded by Theuerkauff which are for the most part similarly monogrammed: Brunswick, Dresden, Hamburg, Karlsruhe, London, New York and Schwerin.
