Notes

The final plaster version of the Muse de la Source, produced in 1893 and currently in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Marseille, was first conceived as a terracotta sketch in 1881. Numerous drawings and versions of this piece were completed to perfect the delicate subject. Born in 1849 in Marseille, Jean-Baptiste Hugues studied under Dumont and Bonassieux. His participation in the 1889 and 1900 Expositions Universelles earned him a gold medal and he was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1889 and then Officer in 1900.
