In 1913, Paul Kotlarevsky emigrated to Paris to enrol at the École des Beaux-Arts. The fragmentation, dynamism and angularity of the present work is an unmistakable reflection of his admiration for Georges Braque, such as Compotier, bouteille et verre (fig.1, 1912, Musée National d'Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou), while his palette brings to mind that of his Russian peers, Alexandra Exter and Vladimir Baranoff-Rossiné. Kotlarevsky's innovative treatment of a Cézannesque motif and Cyrillic script makes this an exceptional example of Russian Cubo-Futurism.
