Notes

From the Renaissance, a new technique enabled artists tocompete with apinting, that of enamelling metal, an extremellydifficult technique which required both artistic knowledge anda great deal of skill. This technique asserted itself in France at the end of the 20thcentury, up until the 1930's.The enamel is a vitreous substance, either colourless orcoloured, opaque or transparent, with wwich the enamellingartist muste come to terms. The alchemy of the mixtures, their fusion and firing and all theother aspect of this technique must be mastered by the artist. The final result depends on the respect of these successivestages, dilatation, retraction and not forgetting chance. This enamelled plate, that we are presenting, is very rare andvery much sought after by art dealers. It shows the taste of the period for the transposition of majorworks of art and the skill of Paul Grandhomme. In this piece, he has managed to translate perfectly the formeand colours of the famous painting by Titien, « Le concertchampêtre », dating from the beginning of the 16th century.
