Notes

Paulus Constantijn la Fargue was the most talented of five artist siblings and made numerous topographical drawings, etchings and paintings in and around The Hague, Rotterdam, Leiden, Haarlem and Amsterdam. Most of his drawings are largely accurate town and village views: most of those dating from the 1760s depict The Hague and Rotterdam and their surroundings, while his works of the 1770s represent a wider range of subjects.

In this drawing, Scheveningen is seen from the north-west side of the beach; another drawing by the artist, made six years later from much the same viewpoint, is in the Gemeentearchief, The Hague. The building to the right of the church is the 'Heerenlogement' and the very small cottage with the sloping roof is called the 'Kalhuis' (see C. Dumas, Haagse Stadsgezichten 1550-1800, Zwolle 1991, pp. 481-2).
