III-XVI], 1834-1849. 16 volumes, 8° (225 x 161mm). 710 (of 717) hand-coloured engraved or lithographic flower plates by F.W. Smith or S. Holden, 27 folding, some heightened with gum arabic, and 5 (of 6) hand-coloured engraved or lithographic plates of designs for gardens and ornaments, tissue guards in vols. I-XII. Vols II-XVI with woodcut title-vignettes. Woodcut illustrations, some full-page. (Some spotting, browning, and offsetting, some plates trimmed causing small losses, short tear on XII, 2L1, 2 plates and 2 leaves detached in vol. XIV, one pair trimmed and crudely reinserted. lacking all half-titles, one preliminary leaf in vol. XVI, and vol. XV, no. 169.) Contemporary half roan over moiré cloth by G. Simms, Manchester Simms and Dinham, Manchester, spines gilt in compartments, lettered in 2, gilt edges (some rubbing, marking, and chipping, splitting on some joints and hinges, 4 spines with short tears, causing losses on 2). Provenance : George Long (bookplates, possibly the banker, 1823-1909). FIRST EDITION of one of the most popular and successful Victorian botanical periodicals.
