We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, for endorsing the attribution to William Newton and dating the picture before 1800, after inspection of the original (written communication, 30 April 2015). Little is known about the artist, he exhibited fruit still lifes in the Royal Academy in 1783 and 1784.
