Description

PERCY F S SPENCE (1868-1933), Portrait of the HMS M1 Submarine on the High Seas, watercolour and pencil heightened with white, signed and dated 1920, 7 1/2" x 14 3/4", unframed
HMS M1 was a Royal Navy submarine launched in 1917, commissioned towards the end of World War 1, fitted with guns and intended for use against surface ships in preference to torpedoes giving it an effective range of 15000 yards as opposed to 1000 yards for a torpedo. On 12th November 1925 the submerged M1 collided with the Swedish Ship S.S. Victor while on an exercise in the English Channel, she sank with the loss of her entire sixty nine hand crew
