Item Overview

Description

PETER COOPER AND COOPER UNION. Two half plate daguerreotypes. The portrait of Cooper (1791 - 1883) shows him younger than the well-known portraits with his voluminous beard. It is from the 1840's. Cooper was an industrialist, inventor, and entrepreneur in many fields. He was anti-slavery and involved in Indian Affairs. He ran for President in 1876. One of his great visionary achievements was the creation of the radical educational institution Cooper Union (1853 - 1859), that still part of New York City's cultural landmarks. The image of Cooper Union is an engraving titled "An Institute for the Free Instruction in Useful and Practical Science and Art." The daguerreotype is by S. Root, and has his logo embossed on the mat. Provenance: This object was a lot in the famous Strober Sale at Parke-Bernet (that became Sotheby's) in 1972, the first major auction in the US devoted to photography. One of the scans is an earlier image of the plate with the Parke-Bernet stamp still on it. A number of other lots in this sale were also acquired from that sale. See Lots 44, 45, 46.)Both plates are in cases with separated covers. The portrait of Cooper has some vertical wipes at the sides [D3]. The Root, in a case with separated cover, has a small spot in the center, but is still [3+].
