artist's proof, signed and dated "P. G. 1993" lower right. The hands in the print are depicting signs from American Sign Language spelling out the title of the print, "Hoping Still". Peter Gourfain is a sculptor-printmaker, born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1934 and currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. He studied at Chicago Art Institute graduating with a BFA in 1956. He has taught at many prestigious universities, and he has received many commissions, including a commision to create twenty-four bronze reliefs for the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan. His work is currently in collections at the Museum of Modern Art , NY; the Guggenheim Museum, NY; the Brooklyn Museum, NY; the Nueberger Museum, NY: and the Museum of Arts & Design (formerly the American Craft Museum), as well as in many private collections.
