Notes

The nine sketches offered in lot 192 appear to be preparatory for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass with illustrations by Peter Newell, Harper and Brothers, 1901, the early printing, apparently the first with illustrations, of the Lewis Carroll book in America. The titles here come from the first line of the dialogue balloons on each page. Some have additional comments (or "suggestions" - as the artist has described one of them in the lower margin of the sketch in the upper right corner of lot 192) in the borders beyond the images. However, only one image by Newell, the one offered in lot 193, "Alice with her arms clasped lovingly round the soft neck of the Fawn" from "Through the Looking Glass", can be found in either of the two early Peter Newell editions of the "Alice" books available for perusal at or prior to the auction. None of the images is laid down.
