Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 27 October 1999, lot 298.
CATALOGUE NOTE

The scene sculpted on the sarcophagi of the latter is taken from the terracotta relief by Lucas Faydherbe of circa 1640-1650, in Brussels, Koninklijke Musea voor Kunst en Geschiedenis, inv. no. V.1958 (see De beeldhouwkunst in de eeuw van Rubens, exhibition catalogue, Brussels, Museum voor Oude Kunst, 15 July - 2 October 1977, cat. no. 67, p. 103, reproduced). Faydherbe moved to Antwerp in 1636 to work for Rubens, from whose Drunken Silenus supported by Satyrs (London, National Gallery), he almost certainly drew his inspiration for this relief. The scene sculpted on the sarcophagi of the former bears a close resemblance to another work by Rubens, the Drunken Silenus now in Munich, Alte Pinakothek.
