Description

Historia scholastica, illuminated manuscript on vellum, 274 leaves, 40 lines of double column text, written in brown ink in a rounded Gothic bookhand, paragraph headings and rubrication marks in red, 14 large flourished initials, six- to 13- lines high with staves of red and blue filled with red penwork, two- and three-line initials alternately of red and blue throughout, all with calligraphic flourishes of the contrasting colour, many paragraphs divided by vertical flourishes of feathered stems, contemporary glosses and pointing hands in the margins, with catchwords at end of each gathering and some signature marks in red ink (added in pencil where cropped), two autograph letters (discussing the manuscript and its binding) from Henry Sotheran & Co. tipped-in at front, first three gatherings slightly shorter, a few others a little dust-stained or yellowed, occasional worming (mainly to first few leaves) and one or two other holes in the text, library stamps in blank lower margins of approximately 30 leaves (occasionally affecting penwork flourishes), brown panelled morocco by Sotherans, preserved in purpose-made solander box, folio (315 by 220mm), [Genoa, dated 1303 on colophon]

Artist or Maker

Notes

The colophon names the scribe as Luca di Genova ("...p[er]manus magi[stri] luce de ianua") and gives the date as 1303. Collation: a-z, aa 1-12 (signature m with only 10 leaves but apparently complete?).
