PROVENANCE

Anonymous sale, Stockholm, Bukowski, 20/21 September 1933, lot 112 (as J.P. van Schoten);
Anonymous sale, Stockholm, Bukowski, 26 May 1999, lot 475 (as attributed to Petrus Schotanus).

LITERATURE

S.A. Sullivan, The Dutch Gamepiece, Totowa 1984, pp. xii, 75/6. reproduced fig. 153.

NOTE

The present work is characteristic of Schotanus, who often used the celestial globe, the hourglass and dead game in his still lifes. These works can have a strong moralizing character, given the biblical texts on the painted documents, of which, according to Sullivan (see Literature: pp. 75/6), the top lines can be identified as a selection from Psalm 10.
