Watercolour on paper, signed on the obverse and dated Barnard/ 1847, mounted within glazed rectangular wood frame with gilt border.
Oval, 124mm (4 7/8in) high

Notes


The sitter's identity is based on the inscription to the reverse of the frame which states that the miniaturist was the father or uncle of Dicken's illustrator. Other known portraits of the author as a young man tend to portray him with far darker and slightly longer hair.
