Philip-Lorca diCorcia's career emerged in the 1970s as conceptual photography was taking a footing. Embracing its emphasis on theory, diCorcia presents seemingly 'natural' photographs which are in fact carefully staged. Contradictorily, what appears to be a scene from daily life is actually a fictitious scenario cinematically lit and carefully tested. In so doing, the final image elevates everyday occurrences beyond the realm of banality.
