Epigramme de Horace Walpole
Le Château d’Otrante, référence inspiratrice de Philippe Perrin, a été écrit au XVIIIe siècle par Horace Walpole (1717-1797). Il est considéré comme l’auteur du premier roman gothique de la littérature anglaise. Il écrivit ce roman à Strawberry Hill , près de Twickenham, en juin1764, dans un petit château néo-gothique qu’il fit construire à cette époque.
Dans sa préface, Paul Eluard parle ainsi de cet écrivain :
« Horace Walpole a été le précurseur du Roman noir : de Maturin (pour la mise en scène), de Lewis (pour la précipitation passionnée des événements), d’Ann Radcliffe (pour l’atmosphère et le droit à l’absurde) et même d’Achim d’Arnim (pour la froideur dans le bizarre). Et quelques-uns des grands pans d’ombre du Château d’Otrante alimentent le terrible feu qu’allumèrent Sade, Poe et Lautréamont pour échapper au néant. Comme il n’y a qu’une grandeur, cela assure à jamais la gloire d’Horace Walpole.”*
A l’origine de son roman, un rêve d’une nuit de juin 1764. L’action du roman Le Château d’Otrante se déroule à Otrante, dans le Salento, au sud de l’Italie. Il commence avec la mort de Conrad, le fils de Manfred, le jour même de son mariage, tué par la chute d’un casque géant tombé du ciel : C’est cet événement qui va inspirer Philippe Perrin. Le casque est ainsi la traduction contemporaine de cette tragédie. Francis Lacassin en parle ainsi : « Surgi de l’au-delà un casque géant tombe dans la cour d’honneur du Château dOtrante et tue le fils du prince. Un
portrait de famille pousse un profond soupir, sort de son cadre et descend sur le sol avec un air mélancolique. Les statues de guerriers descendent de leur marbre, saignent du nez. Et le siècle des lumières, stupéfait, assiste à l’entrée des ténèbres. »
Pour résumer, selon Paul Eluard : «Le château d’Otrante est un drame plastique, la forme la plus amère, la plus rugueuse, mais aussi la mieux taillée du malheur en amour.../...
Seuls immortels, les désirs vont leur chemin, malgré d’extraordinaires obstacles, malgré les rideaux du sang et les miroirs vides, la nature exclue, l’existence approximative, la vue inutile, les ancêtres vomis par l’Enfer, malgré la peur, l’héroïsme, la férocité, malgré le marbre des tombeaux et les squelettes, les désirs sans cesse au fil de la mort, cherchent à briser avec l’imaginaire », extrait de la préface du roman Le château d’Otrante d’Horace Walpole, par Paul Eluard.

que Philippe Perrin a voulu nous faire réapparaître avec cette œuvre magistrale ; ce casque géant surgit des limbes de ce conte gothique du XVIIIe siècle.
