Philippe Poitevin was born in Saint-Maximin and studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He exhibited at the Paris yearly Salons as early as 1855 showing busts and médaillons, as well as personages and genre scenes, with great acclaim. He is best known for his involvment in the creation of the Château d'eau in the parc longchamp in Marseilles.
