On the strength of the strong resemblance between the sitter in this and in two other portraits by Philips de Koninck, Sumowski notes the possibility that the sitter of the present lot might have been a member of the van Schooten family, and the sitters in the other portraits (one on the Dutch art market, the other untraced, both illustrated by Sumowski) his brothers (loc. cit.).
