Carnations in a glass vase on a stone table indistinctly signed and dated 'PH***** **M**L*** 1639' ('PH' linked, on the ledge) oil on panel 177/8 x 133/8 in. (45 x 34 cm.) PROVENANCE with Galerie Sanct Lucas, Vienna, 1973. LITERATURE M.-L. Hairs, Les Peintres Flamands de Fleurs au XVIIe siŠcle, Tournai, 1985, pp. 357, 359 and 360, pl. 121. B. Wieseman in the catalogue of the exhibition, The Age of Rubens, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1993-1994, p. 504, fig. 1. J. de Maere, Illustrated Dictionary of 17th-Century Flemish Painters, Brussels, 1994, II, p. 794. NOTES As Betsy Wieseman observed ( op. cit. ), bouquets of a single type of flower are rare but not unknown in 17th century Netherlandish still-life painting. She compared the present work to still lifes of carnations by Georg Flegel, Balthasar van der Ast, and Jacob van Hulsdonck ( ibid., no. 97, illustrated).
