NOTES As Betsy Wieseman observed ( op. cit. ), bouquets of a single type of flower are rare but not unknown in 17th century Netherlandish still-life painting. She compared the present work to still lifes of carnations by Georg Flegel, Balthasar van der Ast, and Jacob van Hulsdonck ( ibid., no. 97, illustrated).
