Notes

As Sumowski noted (loc. cit.), this drawing is comparable in style to works by Koninck such as the Christ Among the Doctors, in Leipzig (Sumowski 1398υX) and the Last Supper, in the Amsterdams Historisch Museum (Sumowski 1420υX). Though it was formerly attributed to Hoogstraten, the distincive, angular figure types and broad yet subtle use of wash are entirely typical of Koninck. On the basis of similarities between the landscape details and a signed and dated landscape drawing of 1660, formerly in the Koenigs Collection (Sumowski 1358), Sumowski proposes a dating of circa 1660 for the present drawing too.
