Notes

PROPERTY OF THE TRUSTEES OF MRS. B.M. HOARE'S SETTLEMENT (LOT 5)

The present picture is remarkable within Koninck's oeuvre for combining his talents as a portraitist and a landscape painter in such an overt manner. Moreover, the landscape, which is composed along a strong diagonal axis, bears little relation to the panoramic views for which he is best known. Gerson (op.cit.) likens the compositional formula to Jacob van Ruisdael and notes that the rendering of the trees is comparable with Guillaum Dubois. He dates the picture to circa 1650 on the basis of the costume.

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium, which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
