PHILLIPS, Giles Firman (1780-1867). The Theory and Practice of Painting in Water Colours, as Connected with The Study of Landscape; with Hints of Perspective; on Pencilling; on the Arrangement of Objects for Pictorial Effect; on Light and Shade; and on the Harmony of Colour. London: Charles Tilt, 1838. Oblong 4to (238 x 305mm). Hand-coloured aquatint frontispiece, 5 uncoloured lithographed plates, 4 uncoloured aquatint plates and 4 hand-coloured aquatint plates, 2-pages of publisher's advertisements at the end (occasional spotting, small section excised from corner of title). Contemporary half plum roan gilt, gilt edges (rubbed, some staining, hinges of first few leaves including frontispiece rather crudely reinforced). The subjects of the fine coloured views include Clifton Baths Gravesend, Hamborough Castle and Greenwich College.
