Notes

Born in Lebowa, 'Doctor' Phatuma Seoka traded as a herbalist in Johannesburg from 1950-66. He taught himself to sculpt after a sangoma suggested it might cure his recurring dream about a large mountain snake. Using the natural shape of the wood, Seoka sculpts colorful, distorted figures of township men resembling thin snake-like figures.
