Item Overview

Description

*Pier Francesco Mazzuchelli, called Il Morazzone (1571/3-1626) the martyrdom of a saint. Black chalk on blue paper. 217 by 172mm. This study seems to be related to The Decollation of St George in the homonymous chapel, part of Morazzone's decorations for the Sanctuary of Rho (see Il Morazzone, exh.cat. Varese, 1962, cat.6 illus.10). It seems that the chapel was comissioned by Carlo Torre, who died in 1603; the frescoes must have been executed circa 1602-4, and in any case before 1605, when Morazzone received payments for his fresco of The Way to Calvary, painted for the Sacro Monte in Varallo. The central altarpiece for the chapel was executed by Ambrogio Figino before 1608.
