Notes

THE PROPERTY OF A FRENCH PRIVATE COLLECTOR

The artist was a significant figure in the artistic life of Treviso, but, although many works by him are documented - the earliest in 1495 - only one documented work survives: the fresco of Christ in the semi-dome of the chapel of the Santissimo in Treviso Cathedral, commissioned in 1511. The chronology of his oeuvre is consequently hard to establish, although mature works probably include the Sacra conversazione (Treviso, Mus. Civ. Bailo), Christ the Redeemer (Parma, Galeria Nazionale), the Virgin and Child with Donor (Venice, Ca' d'Oro) and the Holy Family with a male Donor (Bassano, Museo Civico). In addition to the influences of Bellini (although as Pennacchi is recorded in Treviso almost annually from 1483, he could not have been Bellini's pupil in Venice from 1490 to 1500, as has been suggested), Antonello and Girolamo, his secure works reflect northern and Lombard elements and early paintings by Lorenzo Lotto.

No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 17.5% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
