Pierre du Chesne: a Louis XIV very rare brass-inlaid red tortoiseshell quarter repeating pendule de voyage with balance and pendulum control, Paris, circa 1680
41D 2-inch chapter ring with every minute numbered and applied with twelve enamel hour plaques, set on a foliate engraved surround signed Duchesne A Paris along the lower edge, regulation dial above XII, the similarly signed movement with four baluster pillars, shaped plates, verge escapement with alternate balance or pendulum control, silk suspension and well pierced balance bridge, outside numbered count wheel, quarter repeating and striking on three top mounted bells, the backplate mounted with the ratchets, gourd-shaped case veneered with red-stained tortoiseshell inlaid with brass bands and stringing, arched pediment concealing the bells, compartment on reverse to store pendulum, supported on bun feet.
height 11 in. (27.9 cm.)
Pierre du Chesne, a fine Protestant clockmaker, was received as a master in the guild of Faubourg Saint Germain in March of 1675 and the city of Paris in June of the same year.
