"But a few steps back, the configuration of this Judith does not fail to evoke that of an immense locust. Leaning with her hand on the severed head of Holofernes, she is camped, the calf with the powerful curve brought back. against the thigh, the foot resting on the linen of the bed, a little below the level where the human head lies - which, in contrast to the radiant face which dominates, has the effect of accentuating the animal character of As for Holofernes, as for what remains of him - more than anywhere else here the part is worth the whole! What lubricity went away with the trunk, the head, by its size alone, would be the pledge, which , entrenched in drunkenness, concentrates for then the sinister bitterness - his beard hides his wound from us: but, as it is, reduced to the sole expression of a faded gaze, forever fixed on the very cause of its extinction, lying there, failing the body - what a vehement scream frustrates his mouth, horribly gaping between the thighs of his murderess, prompt you to drown in blood the infamy assumed, as docile to the odious embrace? Now, such a head would not differ in any way from that more than once seen, livid, in biblical iconography. of Goliath, hanging from the frail phalanges of the shepherd's fingers, nor that of the Baptist on the dancer's dish - was here the place where Tonnerre chose to place it and make it appear on his painting, placed on the bed linen , against the pubis of its executrix, mingling her crinkled and bloody hair with the fawn fleece, recently visited, of the heroine, that Tonnerre dared to paint - was not Judith's hand, were not her fingers, which, after a a game of feigned docility, come, with their pulp, brush the eyelids of the beheaded. "La Judith by Frédéric Tonnerre (1865), Figures, September 1961.
