Pierre Nicolas Huilliot was the son of another well-known still life painter, Claude Huilliot, in whose studio he was apprenticed before entering the Académie in 1721. The present more elaborate baroque composition displays his departure from his father's more intimate style, in keeping with the more decorative fashions of his day. His success won him royal patronage, working at Versailles, Fontainebleau and Compiègne.
