Ribera painted many views of the Hacienda San Gabriel and its environs most of which are dated from his visit in 1905.

The Hacienda was built in 1529 as a Franciscan monastery, though later becoming a sugar plantation. During the Mexican War of Independance it was taken over as the headquarters for Emiliano Zapata.
