Rudolf Heylbroeck was student of Baron Georg Minne on the Academy Gent. His sculptural activity was stilistically influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites as well as the symbolistical tendencies of his time. This Pietà is characerized by restrained pain, its reserved, nearly tender forms contrast zestfully the hardness of the material.
