Condition Report

The painting is on an old panel which is bevelled on all sides and probably consists of 2 planks joined horizontally. The panel seems to be flat and stable. The painted surface seems to be in a nice condition, with some areas of very minor paint losses around the edges, probably due to the framing ; these have been retouched. Most of the colours of the figures and buildings seem to be well preserved. The painted surface is covered with a dense and fine craquelure pattern. Some minor thinness can be observed in the sky area. Under UV light The varnish layer fluoresces largely, showing some minor strengthening in a few figures in the centre, around the join and in the sky area. Offered with a black wooden frame with red-coloured imitation tortoise shell made of stained horn. Please note that Sotheby’s does not guarantee the condition of the frame.
