The sitter is the son of Bernard Johan Pielat van Bulderen (1755-1818) and Anna Sara Vromans (1747-1820), and is shown in this portrait at one year old.
In the same year Pierre de la Croix also painted the sitter's grandparents Hendrik van Bulderen (1717-1782) and Carolina Jacoba de Lille (1722-1795), widow of Diederik Christiaan Pielat. Both portraits, signed and dated, are in the collection of H.L.L. van Hoogenhuyze, Zeist.
