NOTE

The pendant to this drawing, with which it was sold in 1883, 1895 and 1899 (see Provenance) recently reappeared at auction (Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 4 November 2003, lot 86). Together, these two highly atmospheric river views are amongst the finest known drawings by this talented but short-lived artist. The distant view of Amsterdam seen here is familiar from the works of a number of Coopse's contemporaries, and Ludolf Bakhuizen in particular.
