NOTE

Flemish by birth, Pieter van Boucle spent most of his working life in France where he worked with fellow still-life painter Lubin Baugin and also in the studio of Simon Vouet. His work combines the still life traditions of his native Flanders, in particular the work of Snyders, with those of his contemporaries in Paris, such as Louis Moillon; compare, for example, the arrangement and treatment of fruit with Snyders' work formerly with a German art dealer (H. Robels, Frans Snyders, p. 228, cat. no. 69, reproduced).
